Myth #4 Librarians must have a lot of time to read...
I am a librarian at a 1-8 library. Beacause many of my grade 3 & 4 readers are advanced I have to read a majority of my middle school titles to determine appropriateness for my younger readers. Also, my students rely on my advice regarding books that might interest them. It is difficult to interest a student in a book that I have not read.
I have a Resource List on Destiny of books I'd recommend. Some students don't have time to come in to see me and talk about books, but they will check out the books I add to my list. It allows me to promote some of the older books they might miss on the shelves.
While I did answer that I read 7+ hours per week, I do this on my own time. I am way too busy at school to find time to read (every once and a while when I'm reading a REALLY good book I will read while I eat my lunch).
I agree. I do the same. There is hardly time to read at work but being in the library helps me identify what books I would like to have on my reading list.
It's part of my job to know what's hot in the YA world. I read w/ my ears while on the elliptical machine, I always have a book at the circulation desk which I read when I'm manning the desk (and not working w/ kids or teachers), and my tweeps keep me apprised of the latest and greatest. It never stops.
I can't imagine any librarian having time during the day to read, we are all so busy. I read at night, listen to books in the car and spend hours reading on the weekends. I suppose we all do what we can to keep up with all the new titles
My responses are probably a little bit of an outlier because I'm just a wanna-be librarian. I do book blog and my day job is teaching reading/writing in elementary school.

DeleteI love to read but most of the reading I do for enjoyment I do at home. Work-related reading usually includes reading reviews.

ReplyDeleteLike many others, I do my reading -- both personal and professional -- at home. On my fixed schedule there is no time to read at school.
ReplyDeleteI do think that the question not asked is When do you read...All reading is done on my own time after 5:00 pm or before 8:30 am
